sun damageYour skin is your largest organ. At The Skin Center, we strive to help you develop a healthy relationship with your skin. Our goal is not only to treat skin problems, such as hyperpigmentation, but to help you prevent them. And since knowledge is power, it helps to understand some skin basics.

The undisputed #1 cause of premature aging is “sun damage” which is the catch-all term for dry, wrinkly skin, often prone to “hyperpigmentation.”

SUN DAMAGE RECOVERY: PART 1 Confessions of a Former Sun Addict

I wasn’t aspiring to be a California raisin. But I was unknowingly headed in that direction. I’ve wreaked havoc on my face over the decades—with sun damage of the all-encompassing kind: hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles galore. With a constellation of sun stars on my 50-something face, I’m like a poster child for sun damage. But all is not lost. (Thank you, Skin Center!)

Yes, there will be “afters” to go with these “befores.” But first, I must confess the insanity of my ways.

BB Creams: Makeup or Magic?

BB CreamsBB creams, also commonly known as “beauty balms” or “blemish balms” have taken the beauty scene by storm lately. We’ve seen them everywhere―in magazines and beauty aisles― by many brand names and price points. In a very short time, BB creams have become one of the biggest skin care hits of the year. Here’s why:

As New Beauty magazine postulates, “If a high-coverage SPF, tinted moisturizer and foundation had a baby, it would be a BB cream.” BB creams offer the best of a moisturizer, a primer, a foundation and a sunblock all in one product. Some formulas even offer broad spectrum UVA/UVB sun protection and serious anti-aging properties. Read more

Dangers of Spray Tanning

Dangers of Spray Tanning

Society’s love-hate relationship with chemicals continues. Now we’re hearing media blasts about the questionable safety of the spray tanning products used by tanning salons. ABC News recently brought the scrutiny of DHA (dihydroxyacetone) into the public eye. This is the active bronzing ingredient in spray tanning products. Here’s the low down that spray tanning salons seem to keep on the down low: Read more

PHOTOAGING: Seeing is Believing

PHOTO: New Beauty Magazine

The New England Journal of Medicine recently released this shocking image of a 66-year old truck driver to depict photoaging—premature aging of the skin caused by repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun.

You scream. I scream. We all scream for sunscreen after seeing a picture of sun damage like this one. It’s so easy to forget our daily sunscreen regimen…or to fall into that “it won’t happen to me” mentality. Read more

SUNSCREEN NEWS—Why SPF Alone Is Not Enough

Choosing your sunscreen simply based on Sun Protection Factor (SPF) doesn’t cut it anymore. We now know that SPF products do not protect against cancer-causing UVA rays. Look for ”Broad Spectrum” sunscreen products—for maximum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

The Big SPF Myth

So you’re faithfully using a daily SPF 15+ sunscreen, under (or in) your foundation. Or, even by itself. Great, right? Well yes, that’s good. However, according to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), it’s not good enough. “A person wearing SPF 50 could spend considerable time in the sun without getting burned. ‘They think they’re getting protected but they’re getting the silent damage from UVA,’ says Steven Q. Wang, director of dermatological surgery and dermatology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.” Read more

Build More Collagen with At-Home MicroDermal Roller Treatments

We recently mentioned Dr. Brandy’s love of Dermal Infusion with the MicroDermal Roller on our Facebook page. Many of our Facebook fans wanted to know more about the device―so, we are happy to cover this collagen-building treatment (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy) in more detail, as promised.

The MicroDermal Roller is a hand-held device with over 200 very fine bristles or needles. This gadget is designed for home use. By gently rolling it over your face, the bristles creates microscopic channels in the skin, allowing for increased absorption of your favorite topical serums, lotions and prescription-grade Retin-A.
