What Pittsburgh Women Seek Through Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic Surgeon, Dominic A. Brandy, MDBy Dominic A. Brandy, MD

Over the last 30 years, thousands of Pittsburgh women have sat in my office, looking for a change.  As a cosmetic surgeon, I have spent countless hours talking with them, listening to their concerns about their face, their neck, their body, their skin.  I know what many of you are thinking — those who seek the services of a cosmetic surgeon do so out of vanity.  However, in my experience this is simply not true.  It is the stereotypes of those who choose cosmetic surgery procedures that are often played out in the media, which on the one hand chronicles every perceived physical flaw or change to a celebrity’s appearance, and on the other bemoans society’s fixation with youth and beauty. PHOTOAGING: Seeing is Believing

PHOTO: New Beauty Magazine

The New England Journal of Medicine recently released this shocking image of a 66-year old truck driver to depict photoaging—premature aging of the skin caused by repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun.

You scream. I scream. We all scream for sunscreen after seeing a picture of sun damage like this one. It’s so easy to forget our daily sunscreen regimen…or to fall into that “it won’t happen to me” mentality. Read more

SUNSCREEN NEWS—Why SPF Alone Is Not Enough

Choosing your sunscreen simply based on Sun Protection Factor (SPF) doesn’t cut it anymore. We now know that SPF products do not protect against cancer-causing UVA rays. Look for ”Broad Spectrum” sunscreen products—for maximum protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

The Big SPF Myth

So you’re faithfully using a daily SPF 15+ sunscreen, under (or in) your foundation. Or, even by itself. Great, right? Well yes, that’s good. However, according to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), it’s not good enough. “A person wearing SPF 50 could spend considerable time in the sun without getting burned. ‘They think they’re getting protected but they’re getting the silent damage from UVA,’ says Steven Q. Wang, director of dermatological surgery and dermatology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.” Read more

And second, gone are the days of nips, tucks and injections in shhhh…secret.

Once rarely talked about in public, it seems that every time we turn on the television, browse the web or open a magazine we are privy to the latest revelations in cosmetic technologies—with plenty of patients openly sharing their stories.

Build More Collagen with At-Home MicroDermal Roller Treatments

We recently mentioned Dr. Brandy’s love of Dermal Infusion with the MicroDermal Roller on our Facebook page. Many of our Facebook fans wanted to know more about the device―so, we are happy to cover this collagen-building treatment (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy) in more detail, as promised.

The MicroDermal Roller is a hand-held device with over 200 very fine bristles or needles. This gadget is designed for home use. By gently rolling it over your face, the bristles creates microscopic channels in the skin, allowing for increased absorption of your favorite topical serums, lotions and prescription-grade Retin-A.

Now Evaluating XEOMIN®—The Latest Wrinkle Remedy

Only wanting to deliver the best products to our clients, The Skin Center Medical Spa is evaluating the effectiveness of XEOMIN®, the latest wrinkle-reducing treatment to receive FDA approval.  As the largest provider of injectable wrinkle treatments in the Tri-State Area, we have been given a preview quantity to sample prior to the market-wide launch in March.  And here’s what we’ve learned so far…

Xeomin (pronounced ‘ZEE-oh-min’) is gaining the attention of beauty experts everywhere— for the treatment of crow’s feet, forehead creases, frown lines (or glabellar lines) between the eyebrows. Following the grand success of Botox® Cosmetic and Dysport®, Xeomin is the third muscular neurotoxin available in the United States to fight unwanted wrinkles. And with more and more women beginning preventative wrinkle treatment injections as early as their twenties, it naturally follows that there will be more “tox-type” treatment options available to consumers.
