Selecting Breast Implants
Breast implants come in a variety of shapes, sizes and surface textures. Each type of breast implant is designed to give the most natural look and feel to the breast. When considering breast enlargement surgery, women will have to decide which type of breast implant, silicone or saline, will best meet their needs.

Silicone Breast Implants for Breast Enlargements
Silicone breast implants are pre-filled with a soft cohesive silicone gel that is considered biocompatible to the body and has been used for many years in medical devices. This type of cohesive gel allows the silicone to remain intact in case of a rupture and reduces the risk of the gel migrating from the breast area.
Many physicians and patients favor the silicone gel-filled breast implant because it offers a more natural look and feel. Silicone breast implants provide a more rounded fuller shape to the breast.
Saline Breast Implants for Breast Enlargement
Saline-filled breast implants are filled with sterilized saline solution. Saline solutions are very common and are used to clean wounds and the surface of the eye. The saline solution used in breast implants has the same salt concentration as the cells within the body, presenting no health risk to the patient even if the breast implant ruptures.
Saline breast implants have a self sealing valve that is used for filling the breast implant with saline solution at the time of surgery. Saline-filled implants often create a breast shape with a gentle slope in the upper area and fullness in the lower portion of the breast.
Type of Incisions for Breast Augmentation
During breast augmentation surgery, the breast implant will be inserted directly under the breast tissue or beneath the chest wall muscle through an incision made around the nipple (periareola) or in the fold of the breast (inframammary).
The type of incision used will be determined during your breast enhancement consultation.
Post Surgical Recovery for Breast Enhancements
Most women experience some degree of discomfort after breast augmentation surgery, however any discomfort can be effectively managed with the proper pain medication.
Following surgery, a surgical bra or compression garment will be worn for one month to help reduce post-operative swelling. In addition, patients are asked to refrain from overhead lifting for one month as well.
Depending on the type of job, most women find they are able to return to work within a week of having the surgery.
It is normal for breast tissue to swell following breast enlargement surgery, so the new breasts often look too large immediately following the procedure. This swelling gradually subsides in two to three weeks, resulting in a more natural look. In some cases, it may take up to 12 weeks or longer for the swelling to subside.
FAQs: Breast Augmentation
Does nipple sensation return after having breast augmentation surgery?
Following breast enlargement surgery, many women do experience a temporary loss of sensation in the nipple and surrounding breast tissue. The loss of sensation occurs from nerve damage during the surgery. As the body heals itself, the nerves also heal and sensation is restored. However, in few cases the loss of sensation may improve, but not reach the same level as before the surgery or it may become a permanent result of the surgery.
What are the effects of breast implants on pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Women with silicone implants do not risk exposing their breast fed children to excessive amounts silicone. TheInstituteofMedicineconcluded “No evidence of elevated silicone in breast milk or any other substance that would be harmful to infants (was found in women with silicone gel-filled breast implants).” They also determined “…that evidence for health effects in children related to maternal breast implants is insufficient or flawed.”
However, breastfeeding difficulties have been reported following breast enhancement surgery, including breast reduction surgery, as well as breast augmentation surgery.
How will breast implants effect having a mammogram?
Mammography can pose a problem for women with breast implants. Mammograms produce an image of the inside of a woman’s breast by compressing the breast. This can present a risk of rupture to the scar around the implant or a rupture of the implant itself. However, the current recommendations for getting screening/preoperative mammograms are no different for women with breast implants than for those without implants.
