Couples Choosing To Undergo Cosmetic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Treatments Together

Skin Center Clientele Reflects National Trend of Men, Women Sharing Cosmetic Surgery Experience

(PITTSBURGH– June 22, 2011) –  Increasingly, women and men looking for a more refreshed, youthful appearance are electing to undergo cosmetic surgery procedures and minimally invasive treatments together.

According to national statistics, what was once an individual decision has become a shared experience, with both partners choosing to undergo one or more procedures, often at the same time.  In their most recent survey released in January 2011, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery identifies couples undergoing plastic surgery together as a rising trend, with five percent of surgeons listing couple procedures as one of the top two rising trends they are seeing; and 18 percent listing couple procedures as among the top five trends in their practice.

The Skin Center Medical Spa, with locations in Pittsburgh, PA and Columbus, OH, is seeing that trend reflected in its own clientele. The Skin Center now sees 24-30 couples a year for cosmetic surgery and minimally invasive procedures, a significant increase from five years ago, when less than half a dozen couples would be seen together in a given year.

This shift can be attributed in part to the fact that growing numbers of male baby boomers – and their younger counterparts -- are choosing to go beyond diet, exercise and lifestyle to achieve and maintain a healthier, more youthful appearance. And while their first introduction to a cosmetic procedure may occur when they tag along on an office visit in support of their wives or partners, partners, they are increasingly open to talking about their own interest in a more youthful appearance.

“Particularly in today’s work environment, men are every bit as concerned as women about keeping their competitive edge and presenting a healthy, vibrant appearance,” says Dominic Brandy MD, medical director and founder of The Skin Center Medical Spa. “They want to physically project the confidence and vitality that they feel on the inside, and while they are less likely to talk about it, there is less stigma than ever before, and we are seeing more and more men taking measures to counter the visible effects of aging.”
