Female Hair Loss Treatment Options

Female Hair Loss Treatment should begin with a visit to a primary care physician who, through simple blood testing, can rule out any medical condition that may cause hair loss.

If a medical condition is not determined to be the cause of the female hair loss, it may be genetically induced hair loss called female pattern hair loss. Hair loss in women can also occur as a natural part of the aging process. For these conditions, the following Female Hair Loss Treatment Options are available:

  • Hair Restoration Surgery
  • Rogaine for Women

Hair Restoration Surgery for Women

Follicular Unit Hair Restoration Surgery for women is a hair transplantation technique that is commonly performed on women with thinning hair.  Hair Restoration Surgery involves using the woman's own hair to restore fullness and volume to thinning areas. To obtain the best results in women, follicular units that contain one to three hairs are used in the hair restoration process.

During a simple outpatient procedure, hair follicles are harvested from the "fringe area" which is located in the back of the head and are then transplanted carefully into the areas where the hair is thinning. Using a very precise technique, there is very little or no damage to the existing hair on the patient's head and there is no need to worry about losing the newly transplanted hair because this hair, which originally grew in the "fringe" area, is not predisposed to pattern baldness.

Most women are very satisfied with the results after one or two Follicular Unit Hair Restoration Surgery sessions, while others opt for an additional procedure for added fullness.

Female Hair Loss Treatment: Rogaine

Rogaine For Women contains minoxidil, which is the only FDA-approved active ingredient to improve female hair loss.  It has been proven safe and effective in the treatment of hair loss in women through extensive clinical trials and years of consumer experience.

Rogaine For Women works with the natural hair growth cycle. Normal hair growth occurs in three cycles or phases:

  • Growth Phase
  • Transition Phase
  • Resting Phase

Sometime during the resting phase, the hair will fall out, or shed, in preparation for new hair to grow. Thus beginning the hair growth phase once again.

For the hair follicles that are genetically predetermined to shed or become thin, the hair follicles get smaller and smaller, which reduces the amount of time the hair follicles spend in the growth phase. This process is called miniaturization. Rogaine For Women, as a hair loss treatment, reverses the hair thinning process and lengthens the growth phase by revitalizing the hair follicle.

For women, who are not satisfied with the results from Rogaine for Women, Hair Restoration Surgery for women may be a consideration.

FAQ's: Hair Loss in Women - Treatment

How do I know which type of hair loss in women treatment is best?

During a private consultation with an experienced hair loss specialist, they will examine your hair loss pattern, and review your medical history information and current medications to confirm the cause of hair loss. The best course of treatment for you will be based on your personal concerns and expectations.

Using a unique magnification system called the MicroCam2001, the natural follicular growth pattern will be examined to determine the stage of hair loss.  If Hair Restoration Surgery is necessary, then a microscopic hair loss tool will help identify the natural follicular growth pattern so that the same pattern may be duplicated during the hair transplantation surgery.

Can over-the-counter hair products help stop hair loss in women?

There are many hair loss products on the market today that claim to stop hair loss or help re-grow lost hair.  Unfortunately many of these hair loss products cannot support their claims with clinical data.  The Skin Center Medical Spa offers female hair loss treatments that are proven effective through clinical studies or Hair Restoration Surgery which offers a permanent result to hair loss.

Are there any alternative Female Hair Loss Treatment Options for women?

The only Female Hair Loss Treatment options for women found to be effective in slowing the progression of female hair loss are Rogaine for Women and Hair Restoration Surgery for more permanent results.

However, for women with thinning or brittle hair, Luce Laser Hair Loss Treatment has been effective in improving the condition and quality of the hair by thickening the hair shaft, and with continued treatment, has been shown to halt the progression of additional hair loss, in some cases.

Are there risks associated with Cosmetic Surgery procedures?

Men and women of all ages choose cosmetic surgery for a number of reasons and the process of deciding to have elective cosmetic plastic surgery is highly individualized and very personal.  This decision can offer lasting improvement not only to an individual's physical appearance, but also to their self-confidence and self-esteem. However, choosing to have any type of elective surgery, including cosmetic surgery is not without risk and potential complications.
