Intense Pulsed Light Therapy for the Body

During Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, a handheld medical wand is used to deliver a series of gentle pulses of intense pulsed light to the skin.  The IPL laser energy bypasses the outer most layer of skin and is absorbed by the pigment and vascular irregularities in the deeper tissue of the skin.

Following Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, it is common for pigmented areas to darken slightly before fading.  A few days after hyperpigmenation treatment with the IPL laser, skin color will become more uniform and will continue to improve with subsequent treatments.

Depending on the skin condition treated, a series of five or more IPL laser treatments may be recommended at three to four week intervals.

Intense pulsed light therapy can be performed on all areas of the body, however the most commonly treated areas include:

  • Neck
  • Back of Hands
  • Chest
  • Shoulders

IPL therapy may also be performed on the face; to learn more about Intense Pulsed Light for the face, click here.

FAQ's: Intense Pulsed Light Skin Treatment

What can I expect during a IPL photo rejuvenation treatment?

Intense pulsed light (IPL) photo rejuvenation treatments are gentle, non-invasive laser skin treatments. During your IPL laser treatment, your IPL skin treatment specialist will use a computer generated hand piece to deliver gentle pulsed light energy to the pigmented area. The treatment may last 15 - 30 minutes, depending on the size of the area treated.  Some people describe the sensation to be similar to the snap of a rubber band on the skin as the pulses of energy are delivered through the hand piece.  Although the treatment is virtually painless for most individuals, a topical anesthetic cream may be applied to minimize any discomfort.

How long will it take to recover from an IPL skin treatment?

An intense pulsed light treatment for the body is a non-invasive, gentle laser skin treatment with virtually no downtime. Most people are able to return to work, apply make-up and resume most activities immediately following treatment.

What are the alternative treatments for Intense Pulsed Light Therapy?

In addition to Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, there are a number of skin treatments available to help improve the appearance of the skin and correct pigmentation irregularities, including:
