FAQs: Tattoo Removal
The Medlite tattoo removal laser emits energy in very short flashes called pulses. The impact of the energy from the pulses is often compared to feeling a series of thin rubber band snaps against the skin.
A topical anesthetic ointment is routinely applied prior to the tattoo removal treatment to alleviate any discomfort and injectable anesthetics are an option for individuals who may be more sensitive. Most individuals describe their laser tattoo removal treatment as more comfortable than expected.
Does the tattoo completely disappear after tattoo removal treatments?
Most tattoos can be completely removed; however, in some cases, 90-95 percent fading can be expected. During consultation, a medical provider will assess the tattoo and ask specific questions that will help determine the outcome of the laser tattoo removal treatment.
It is important to keep in mind, over 100 tattoo inks are in use worldwide today, none of which are regulated by the FDA. Not knowing which type of tattoo ink, how deep or how much was used make it impossible to accurately predict the degree of removal on any given tattoo.
Dark inks (blue/black) and red inks fade the best while oranges and purples usually respond well. Blue and yellow inks are the most difficult to remove, although additional tattoo removal treatments can produce significant fading.
What is the cost of tattoo removal?
The cost for laser tattoo removal treatments depend again on the size, color, age and type of tattoo. Typically, 8 to 10 treatment sessions are needed to remove or significantly lighten most tattoos. Because the cost of the laser tattoo removal will depend on the color, size and age of your tattoo, the treatment plan and cost, will be determined during your private consultation.
Aren't tattoo removal creams just as effective as laser tattoo removal?
No, they are not. Tattoo removal creams may help to lighten or fade a tattoo, but not significantly. Because tattoo ink is placed below the skin's surface, creams and lotions simply won't penetrate deep enough into the skin to have a profound impact on the tattoo. If anything, the tattoo removal cream may lighten the surface of the tattoo. Laser tattoo removal is the only effective treatment for tattoo removal.
Do I need to stay out of the sun during my laser tattoo removal treatment?
The area being treatment by laser tattoo removal will need to be protected from direct sun exposure, either by clothing or sunscreen, two weeks prior to the tattoo removal treatment and two weeks following the treatment.
Tattoo Removal Alternative Treatments
The older the tattoo, the more likely it is that pigment may have migrated widely and deeply under the skin. Thus, some "old" tattoos may not be completely removable by any means other than surgical excision, which can also be performed at The Skin Center Medical Spa by one of our physicians. If a surgical approach is a consideration, we can schedule a physician consultation for you to discuss the procedure.
