Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants Give Women More Options
The Skin Center Medical Spa now offers Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants.
Since the recent approval of silicone-filled breast implants by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, more women than ever before are requesting information about this type of implant. Dominic A. Brandy M.D and associate physicians at The Skin Center Medical Spa now offer silicone gel-filled and saline-filled implants to women considering breast augmentation surgery.
"We are very pleased with the FDA's decision to approve the use of silicone breast implants," said Dominic Brandy, MD, founding medical director of The Skin Center Medical Spa. "When only one type of implant was available, there was no choice. Women can now evaluate their options and we can suggest the implant we believe will give them the most natural look and feel."
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly 340,000 women in the U.S. had breast implant surgery in 2005. Of those women, approximately 86% were augmentation patients, up 10% from 2004, and approximately 14% were reconstruction patients. While research shows that surgeons and patients prefer silicone gel-filled breast implants to saline-filled implants, saline has been the only option for women seeking augmentation surgery until now.
The controversy and ultimate ban of silicone implants in 1992 resulted from insufficient evidence to determine if silicone implants were safe. Scientific studies conducted since the ban have concluded that there is no scientific link between silicone implants and the systemic diseases that have been rumored to be connected to their use.
Today's silicone gel-filled breast implants are different from the products that were available in the 1970's. Arguably, no other medical device has been more studied for safety than silicone gel-filled breast implants and decades of research have evaluated their safety and effectiveness. Silicone-filled breast implants have been used with success for more than three decades in over 60 different countries and according to the manufacturer of the INAMED® Silicone-Filled Breast Implants, the implants have an outer shell that is more than 50% thicker than earlier implant devices and can withstand more that 25 times the force of a normal mammogram without failure.
