Injectable Fillers
Over time, the effects of aging can take a toll on our appearance. Our skin becomes thinner, loses its elasticity, and is more prone to fine lines, wrinkles, creases and folds. Fortunately, it is possible today to restore a smoother, more youthful appearance with the use of dermal fillers, which are injected beneath the skin's surface to fill depressed areas.
There are several types of injectable fillers available today, including hyaluronic acid, sculptra®, collagen and autologus fat, making it easier to find a facial rejuvenation treatment to meet your lifestyle.
Hylauronic Acid
Healthy, youthful skin contains two key compounds that diminish as we age -- hylauronic acid and collagen.
Hylauronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar compound found in the human body. This acid helps maintain skin volume by attracting and binding water, giving the skin a smooth, plump appearance. However with time, sunlight and environmental factors, the hyaluronic acid in our skin diminishes causing fine lines and wrinkles to appear.
Injectable hyaluronic acid can temporarily replace this compound, giving your skin the volume and firmness it has lost. Fillers containing hyaluronic acid include Restylane®, Perlane®, Hylaform® and Captique™.
Sculptra®
As we age our face begins to lose the underlying structural elements that give it fullness and volume -- fat and muscle. This loss of fat and muscle causes our skin to lose its shape and over time wrinkles and hollow areas begin to appear around our eyes, cheeks and temples. Sculptra®, an FDA-approved dermal filler, helps to restore and correct facial fat loss in larger areas of the face by stimulating the body’s natural ability to produce collagen. Unlike other injectable fillers, the results achieved with Sculpltra are long lasting and may last up to two years.
Collagen Replacement
Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that provides shape, resiliency and texture to the skin. Over time, the collagen found in the human body begins to breakdown creating the appearance of fine lines, creases and wrinkles in the skin. Collagen injected just below the surface of the skin temporarily raises the depressed areas, giving facial skin the support it needs to appear firm and youthful.
People interested in collagen injections now have a choice between two different types of collagen - Zyderm®/Zyplast® and CosmoDerm®/CosmoPlast®.
Autologus Fat Injection
Fat injections, or autologus fat transfer, is one of the most popular treatments for reducing the appearance of fine lines, creases and wrinkles. This procedure involves removing a small amount of fat from one area of the body, usually the hips, thighs or buttocks, and transferring it to the depressed facial areas. Because the fat is from the patient's own body, there is virtually no risk of an allergic reaction. If you are considering fat injections, visit our Autologus Fat section, which will provide you with more information about the treatment.
