Frequently Asked Questions
How does the laser remove tattoos?
The Medlite C6 tattoo removal laser removes tattoo ink with light energy. The laser emits a combination of specific wavelengths of light, which is reflected or simply passed through the skin and absorbed by tattoo ink. The rapid absorption of light energy causes the pigment to destruct where it is then removed by our bodies’ natural metabolic process.
Is it painful to have tattoos removed?
The Medlite tattoo removal laser emits light in very short flashes called pulses. The impact of the energy from the pulses of light can be compared to feeling a series of thin rubber band snaps on the skin.
A topical anesthetic ointment is routinely applied prior to the treatment to alleviate any discomfort; however, certain areas of the body may be more sensitive than others. Most individuals describe their laser tattoo removal treatment as more comfortable than expected.
How many laser tatoo removal treatments will it take to remove the tattoo?
The number or tattoo removal treatments depends on many factors including the size, location and age of the tattoo, the amount and type of ink used and the depth of the ink within the skin. On average, a total of 4-8 treatments, spaced approximately 6-8 weeks apart are necessary. In some instances, an additional treatment or two may be recommended for optimal results.
Will the tattoo completely disappear after treatment?
Most tattoos can be completely removed; however, in some cases, 90-95 percent fading can be expected. During your consultation, your medical provider will assess your tattoo and ask you specific question that will help determine the expected outcome.
It is important to keep in mind, over 100 tattoo inks are in use worldwide today, none of which are regulated by the FDA. Not knowing which tattoo ink, how deep or how much was used, makes it impossible to 100 percent accurately predict the degree of removal on any given tattoo.
The older the tattoo, the more likely it is that pigment may have migrated widely and deeply under the skin. Thus, some "old" tattoos may not be completely removable by any means other than surgical excision, which can also be performed at The Skin Center by one of our surgeons. If a surgical approach is a consideration, we can schedule a physician consultation for you to discuss the procedure and expected outcome.
Do all colors of ink disappear equally as well?
Dark inks (blue/black) and red inks fade the best while oranges and purples usually respond well. Blue and yellow inks are the most difficult to remove, although additional tattoo removal treatments can produce significant fading.
What type of post-treatment care is necessary?
Occasionally there will be pinpoint bleeding associated with laser tattoo removal, however, an antibacterial ointment and dressing will be applied to the area if this occurs. The treated area should be kept clean with continued application of an ointment for protection. A shower can be taken the next day, although the treated area should be very gently washed with a mild cleansing soap.
