Frequently Asked Questions
What is Levulan?
Levulan or Aminolevulinic acid, is a naturally occurring photosensitizing substance that is found in the human body. Levulan has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of actinic keratosis, or pre-cancerous skin lesions. Levulan is activated by a PhotoDerm® treatment (Intense Pulsed Light) or BLU-U Light treatment to improve the appearance and reduce acne rosacea, acne vulgaris, sebaceous hyperplasia, decrease oiliness of the skin and improve texture and smoothness by minimizing pore size.
Is Levulan safe?
Yes. Levulan has been FDA-approved to treat pre-cancerous skin lesions called actinic keratosis. Levulan has been proven to be an effective treatment for a number of skin conditions including hyperpigmentation and active acne.
What is the difference between the BLU-U Light and Intense Pulsed Light?
The BLU-U® Light is not a laser treatment; it emits a cool, visible blue light that targets the acne causing p. acnes bacteria. PDT is especially effective in treating active acne when used with the BLU-U® Light because of the lights ability to target and eliminate the acne causing bacteria.
Intense Pulsed Light is laser light and pulsed light that is directed at the skin. The light passes through the epidermis and penetrates into the dermis. Specific settings are selected for each treatment to maximize improvement.
The type of light used to activate the Levulan may be determined by the type of skin condition being treated.
How many treatments are needed to see results?
The number of treatments will be determined by the condition and area being treated. For maximum improvement of pre-cancerous sun damage, skin tone and texture, usually a series of three treatments 2 - 4 weeks apart is the most effective. However, many patients see dramatic improvement after just one treatment. You will discuss your treatment and outcome goals with your medical provider.
Is Photodynamic Therapy painful?
The Levulan application is totally painless and the application of the BLU-U® Light or IPL is relatively painless. When the IPL is applied some people describe the sensation to be like the snap of a rubber band on the skin as the pulses of energy are delivered through the hand piece. With the BLU-U® Light treatment, some people describe a mild tingling or burning sensation while the light is applied.
Will I experience any side effects from the treatment?
Side effects from Photodynamic Therapy may include mild discomfort, slight swelling or redness and possible skin peeling on the treated area. These side effects tend to go away in a few days.
How quickly can I resume my daily activities?
Most people feel comfortable going back to their normal activities immediately following treatment. It is recommended that direct exposure to the sun be avoided for 36 hours following treatment due to increased photosensitivity.
How much time is needed for Photodynamic Therapy?
The amount of time depends of the area and severity of the condition being treated. The Levulan may be applied from 30 - 90 minutes and the PhotoDerm or BLU-U® Light treatment may last 15 - 30 minutes. Your medical provider will discuss the length of the treatment during your consultation.
