Perlane® is primarily the same product as Restylane® but it contains a larger gel particle of hyaluronic acid making it an ideal filler for larger facial folds and deeper wrinkles as well as for adding volume and contouring to the face. Perlane® is used to fill nasiolabial folds, deep furrows and wrinkles, cheek depressions, hollows under the eyes, as well as for chin augmentation, softening scarring and redefining the border of the lips.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is Restylane® and Perlane® different than other hyaluronic acid-based products?
Unlike some forms of hyaluronic acid, Restylane® and Perlane® are free of animal proteins, limiting the risks of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reactions. Restylane® and Perlane® are made of nonanimal-based hyaluronic acid called NASHA or Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. NASHA is biodegradable and fully biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid.
What is the difference between Restylane® and Perlane®?
Restylane® and Perlane® are primarily the same product, however the hyalulronic acid gel particles in Perlane® are larger than those found in Restylane®. Both products are equally effective but have different applications. The larger gel particles make Perlane® an ideal filler for deep facial wrinkles and folds as well as for enhancing natural contours and adding volume to the face. Restylane® is used for more superficial facial wrinkles and folds, frown lines, forehead lines and lip enhancement. Your service provider will recommend the product that is best suited to your facial enhancement needs.
Are Restylane® and Perlane® safe?
Yes. Dermatologists, and cosmetic and plastic surgeons have used Restylane® since 1996. Perlane®, which is Restylane®'s sister product, received FDA-approval in 2007; however, it has been the preferred cosmetic dermal filler in Europe for more than a decade.
Will I experience any side effects from the treatment?
The side effects from Restylane® and Perlane® are minimal. A small percentage of patients may experience slight redness or swelling that can last a few days or longer.
How often will I need to repeat the treatment?
Typically Restylane® and Perlane® need to be repeated two or three times a year, or about every five or six months. However, recent clinical trials have shown that Restylane® actually encourages the body to produce more collagen, requiring fewer Restylane® injections over time and less hyaluronic acid during subsequent treatments.
How long does a Restylane® or Perlane® injection take?
The length of the treatment depends on the area treated. Typically, the treatment is complete in less than an hour.
