Levulan Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is a process that occurs when Levulan, a naturally occurring photosensitizing agent, is applied to the skin prior to an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment. Photodynamic Therapy acts as a catalyst to quickly improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin and other undesirable conditions including hyperpigmentation, pre-cancerous spots called actinic keratosis, fine lines, enlarged pores, overactive oil glands, stubborn acne, rosacea, and can even improve the appearance of acne scars.

Several treatments, spaced two to three weeks apart may be needed to achieve the desired result. A few days after each treatment the patient will actually see the sun damaged areas of skin lift to the surface and slough off. This is not an overall peel, instead the dark areas alone flake off. The IPL system treats the areas of dilated blood vessels or flushing in a similar way, targeting only the areas of redness while causing no damage to the normal surrounding skin. After the series of treatments, there is a significant reduction of unwanted pigmentation and blotchiness in the skin. These results will be long lasting. In addition the skin will be firmer and have a more consistent texture.
