Demand for Minimally-Invasive MedSpa Procedures Increases Among Men

CoolSculpting, Ultherapy Gain Popularity as Acceptance of Anti-Aging Procedures Grows

(June 3, 2013 — Pittsburgh, PA) With overall acceptance of cosmetic surgery/anti-aging procedures growing and an array of treatments that require little to no downtime now available, men are increasingly turning to new, non-invasive cosmetic procedures such as CoolSculpting® and Ultherapy® to achieve
and maintain a healthier and more fit appearance.

Male patients at The Skin Center Medical Spa in Pittsburgh and Columbus are on the increase, with significant inquiries and bookings attributed to the popularity of office-based treatments such as CoolSculpting and Ultherapy.

“Nonsurgical options are increasingly in demand among our growing list of male patients,” says board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dominic Brandy, MD, founder and medical director of The Skin Center.  “Men are drawn to the fact that they can achieve a younger, more defined appearance without surgery, scarring or time off from work.  Most of the patients we see are already maintaining a healthy lifestyle, but in today’s high-pressure work environment, many men feel that improving their appearance helps them to achieve and/or maintain a competitive edge.”

CoolSculpting allows for the reduction of fat along the waistline and back, those areas that gain inches as men age but are stubbornly resistant to diet and exercise.  Developed by Harvard scientists, this unique, patented treatment uses a targeted cooling technology called Cryolipolysis to eliminate fat cells underneath the skin.

During a CoolSculpting treatment, a non-invasive applicator gently cools and freezes targeted fat cells.  Once frozen, the crystalized fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from the body.  Skin tissue is unaffected, and no needles or incisions are required.  Over time, the thickness of the fat layer is reduced, with the average patient seeing results within three weeks of treatment. The most dramatic results typically occur over a period of two to four months.

“I travel a lot for work and in the winter months tend to gain some weight. I can lose the weight through diet and exercise in the summer, but find that as I’ve gotten older,  losing those pounds does not budge the extra inches around my waist, “ says Jake Warren, 46, who underwent a CoolSculpting treatment in June. “I’m already seeing changes in my mid-section.”

Ultherapy, a new nonsurgical treatment most frequently used to address sagging skin along the eyelid and brow, combines ultrasound imaging with ultrasound therapy and is the first and only device cleared by the FDA for use as a noninvasive face and neck treatment.  As lax skin along the brow is tightened, excess skin over the lids is reduced, opening up the eyes and producing a more refreshed appearance.

Ultherapy enables practitioners to see and direct sound waves deep into and under the skin, heating the underlying tissue layers and producing firmer, more youthful skin without cutting or disrupting the skin’s surface.  The treatment, which is completed in an hour or less, also stimulates the body to create new collagen, resulting in firmer, more youthful looking skin within weeks. Most patients see an initial effect immediately following the procedure, with continued improvement over two to three months as skin over the eyelid continues to tighten and lift with the production of new collagen. In most cases, only one treatment is required.

Ultherapy and CoolSculpting came to market in the Unites States in 2010 and 2011 respectively, and the Skin Center Medical Spa in Pittsburgh, PA; was among the first medical spas in the region to offer these novel technologies.
