EVLT Recovery: 3 Reasons Not to Skip Varicose Vein Follow-ups
So you’ve had your EVLT treatments for varicose veins. Your legs are happy. You are happy. Everything seems just right. You feel like you’ve made a great EVLT recovery. So why bother going to your 6-month and 12-month follow-up appointments? Three good reasons. Read on…
One of the questions we’re frequently asked about EVLT recovery is about the importance of follow up exams, specifically the 6-month and 1-year follow-up appointments. It’s easy to see the importance of the 1-week and 1-month follow-up—especially if you have had Varicose Vein treatment with Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT). But why come in for these other appointments so many months after a procedure? Here’s why:
1. To ensure optimal EVLT recovery
The importance of these appointments actually stems from what happens to your vein after an EVLT treatment. Many patients think that because their leg looks and feels better that the process is done. This isn’t the entire story. EVLT closes the vein down from inside the vein using the heat from a laser. With this varicose vein laser surgery the vein is closed immediately after the procedure however it is still there. Your body will reabsorb the vein over the next 6 to 8 months. You may actually be able to feel the vein under your skin during part of this time as it is harder than a normal vein, although most patients aren’t able to. The importance of the 6-month and 1-year appointments (and ultrasounds) is to make sure the process is complete and that your body has reabsorbed the vein completely.
2. To catch rare complications early
It is rare, but there is a 1 to 2 percent chance that the vein may open back up during the EVLT recovery process. If this happens, it will likely happen within the first 6 months. Obviously it is better to know that as soon as possible so it can be treated.
3. To help your legs look their best
