PAIN WITHOUT THE VEIN: Hidden Symptoms of Vein Disease

leg pain and vein diseaseMore than 25% of all Americans suffer from vein disorders, also known as venous insufficiency—and many of them don’t even know it!

Why? Because the “big vein myth” still exists—the notion that vein disorders are predominantly a cosmetic issue; that they always show up as visible spider veins or unsightly, bulging varicose veins.

Not true! Many people walk around with plenty of leg complaints —without the typical signs of spider veins or varicose veins.

Are you one of them?

Symptom Checker:

Do you experience any of these annoying leg symptoms?

  • throbbing, pulling, creeping, or other unpleasant sensations
  • aches, pains or fatigue
  • tingling or twitching sensations—especially when at rest
  • the uncontrollable urge to move legs—especially at night
  • a feeling of leg heaviness
  • swelling, bruising, rashes or skin discoloration

Undiagnosed venous insufficiency is a real problem. All too often, when vein issues aren’t visible, it doesn’t even dawn on primary care physicians (or their patients) that the underlying cause of these symptoms could be hidden vein disorders.  And leaving venous issues untreated can eventually lead to much larger health problems.

Restless Leg Syndrome & Vein Disease

Many of these symptoms are ALSO symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). In fact, 22% of RLS sufferers (nearly 1 in 4) have underlying vein issues.

While there is no specific treatment for all RLS patients—studies show that there is treatment for the 22% of RLS patients who have underlying venous disorders!

  • The journal Phlebology reports that 98% of patients with restless leg syndrome and venous insufficiency experienced relief from symptoms with vein treatments such as laser vein therapy, known as Endovenous Vein Laser Therapy (EVLT)
  • Phlebology states that 80% of these patients had long-term relief

Proper Diagnosis is the Key!

The good news is that in Pittsburgh, varicose veins and other vein issues can be diagnosed in minutes at The Skin Center. A simple, diagnostic ultrasound can detect underlying reflux, or blood flow problems—that can be corrected with proper treatment at our fully-accredited Vein Care facility.

With board-certified physicians, registered nurses and registered ultrasound sonographers, we are experts in Pittsburgh vein disease.  In February 2011, The Skin Center Medical Spa attained recognition for providing a high level of patient care and quality testing in the diagnosis of vascular disease by earning the accreditation of The Intersocietal Commission for Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories (ICAVL).  The ICAVL provides facility accreditation programs for various types of medical diagnostic imaging.
