Restylane Silk has already been coined the “Princess of Fillers.” And while Kylie Jenner may be ready for the world to stop talking about her lips, beauty bloggers everywhere are talking up Restylane Silk, saying that this is the product that can put an end to overblown “duck lips.” Restylane Silk is the latest formulation of hyaluronic acid in the Restylane product family. It’s the first and only FDA-approved product that’s specifically designed for subtle lip enhancement and the smoothing of lip lines and wrinkles around the mouth.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a type of sugar, a polysaccharide called a glycosaminoglycan, produced naturally in the skin. It’s part of what gives our skin its youthful plumpness because it hold 1,000 times its weight in water. Since it binds so well with H20, locking it into the dermis, hyaluronic acid has become a beauty mainstay—a popular ingredient in moisturizers and many other skin care products, including injectable dermal fillers.

Sadly, our skin’s own hyaluronic acid degrades with age and when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays. For lips, this results in thinning and lost shape. And for smokers (and for avid straws users) vertical lines tend to develop above the lip over time.

The good news is: when injected under the skin, hyaluronic acid combats these beauty conundrums by providing an appearance of fullness and smoothing out fine lines and wrinkles. The results is a more youthful appearance.

What makes Restylane Silk so different from other HAs?

Like other members of the Restylane family, Restylane Silk is a clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid used for lip augmentation.

We asked Adrienne Ashtari, RN, one of the highly-trained expert injectors at The Skin Center in Pittsburgh, to explain what makes this new HA so unique. As a National Trainer for the Galderma Pharmaceutical Company, Adrienne is in a unique position to review this product. Several times a month, she travels nationwide to train physicians, PA’s, Nurse Practitioners and RN’s how to inject the Restylane family of hyaluronic acid products (Restylane®, Restylane-L®, Restylane® Silk, Perlane®, and Perlane-L®) as well as the neuromodulator, Dysport® and the a biostimulatory product, Sculptra®.

Adrienne explains, “Restylane Silk is a finer particle than Restylane so it’s much smoother than any other HA, yet still holds its shape for up to 6 months! It defines the lips giving them a smooth, natural, hydrated appearance. Restylane Silk is so versatile that women with a variety of ‘lip types’ are candidates for this injectable filler.”

Trained in a variety of Restylane Silk injection techniques, Adrienne has helped patients with thinning lips looking for more fullness as well as those whose shape and definition could only be helped with lip liner before trying this product. She’s injected patients who were terrified of looking “done” and Adrienne reports that all patients have been more than satisfied with the natural-looking results. “It’s even great for women who have large lips to begin with, but have vertical lip lines like myself,” admits Adrienne. “It defined my lips perfectly and took away my lines without looking overdone.”

Restylane Silk also works well as smooth HA for the tear trough—especially for patients with thin skin—where the use of other products might reveal lumpiness. Each type of HA is different. One product will not be appropriate for all situations. As Adrienne explains, “Juvéderm® and Belotero® spread out into the surrounding tissue, and that is a desirable outcome where applicable. Restylane Silk, with its fine needle and smaller particles, allows for fine tuning, aesthetically speaking. It will definitely be another tool in our toolbox.”

What Restylane Silk patients are saying…

In a clinical study of patients treated with Restylane Silk or no treatment, clinical investigators reported:

  • 77% of patients treated with Restylane Silk showed at least a one-point improvement in lip fullness (measured on a 5-point scale) eight weeks after treatment
  • 59% of patients treated with Restylane Silk maintained lip fullness six months after treatment

Restylane Silk’s unique particle gel formula, along with an ultrafine needle designed for improved accuracy, helps give you softer, more precise results — just what you need for a natural-looking smile.

In the same clinical study, patients treated with Restylane Silk reported fast-acting, long-lasting results:

  • 98% of patients reported a visible improvement in lip fullness 14 days after injection
  • 76% of patients still had lip improvement six months following injection

As with any other hyaluronic acid gel that is injected into the lips, the most common side effect is temporary swelling.

The “ideal lip” is proportioned with 40% fullness in the upper lip and 60% fullness in the lower lip and corners that turn slightly upward. “Many patients want to achieve that balance. They also come to us if they have lip lines or one of the conditions depicted below,” states Adrienne.
