Get Smart About Summer Skincare STAT.

Blog_Suncreen_Not_Enough_4302012Remember slathering baby oil all over your pasty white skin and lounging at the community pool for hours? Let’s pretend that never happened! It’s time to move forward and treat your skin to a summer filled with the pampering and protection it so rightly deserves.

Here’s the skinny on summer skincare you’ve always wanted.

#1: Screen Up or Shut Up.

You were not intended to sizzle in the sun. Presumably, if you are reading this, you care about your skin and preserving its youthful appearance. Sun today means wrinkles tomorrow (at a minimum). It can also mean melanoma.

Even that healthy glow you so covet, well, it better be the result of a self-tanning potion. Changes in your skin from the sun are the result of damage from the sun’s rays. Period.

While any shade of pink or bronze from sun exposure (or heaven forbid a tanning bed!) is your foe, “broad-spectrum” sunscreen that protects against UVB and UVA radiation is your friend.

Keep in mind, the SPF number on sunscreens only reflects the product’s ability to screen UVB rays. Currently, there isn’t an FDA-approved rating system that measures UVA protection levels, therefore ingredients matter. Look for these ones: ecamsule, avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide, sulisobenzone and zinc oxide.

Yes, they’re likely to cost more—and for good reason: they do more. Pony up—you’re worth it. Now is the ideal time get serious about your sunscreen and save with our BOGO 50% OFF deal and no limits on quantities on sunscreen purchases from EltaMD® (SPFs 30, 45 and 50) and SkinMedica® (SPFs 20, 30 and 50).*

Stock up and save so you can apply regularly, liberally and religiously. Remember to screen up 20 minutes prior to exposure to absorb the product. And, don’t forget about your lips, ears, hands and scalp!

#2: See #1 and Buy a Hat.

Spring for a big one with a brim that covers your face and protects your neck—and sit in the shade. If you don’t look good in hats and/or you’re going to be stubborn about donning one, invest in a spray that will protect the sensitive skin on your scalp.

Parts in your hair can get absolutely scorched in short order; particularly if you’re fair and have fine, blond hair. If you are a guy who’s losing your hair, or shaving your head preemptively to beat nature to the punch, be extra vigilant with your sunscreen and hat.

#3: Eat, Drink and Have it Made in the Shade.

Eating and drinking to increase your antioxidant intake is just as virtuous (and way more fun and delicious) than applying them with creams and serums (but keep doing that, too).

The resveratol in red wine has a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect that can decrease the redness from acute sunburns. There’s also some growing evidence that suggests oral intake of vitamins C and E together can limit potential for sunburn.

Consider tossing a salad with vitamin C-rich citrus, berries, tomato and vitamin E-rich nuts to create a healthy summer staple that just might act as an added SPF booster. For dessert, try melon, including cantaloupe and watermelon, to deliver an extra hydrating antioxidant boost with the possible side effect of a radiant complexion!

#4 Hydrate A Lot and Often.

It’s hot, humid and prime time for dehydration, which can wreak havoc on the moisture balance of body and skin, increase the buildup of toxins and result in headaches and lethargy.

Plain, pure water, namely eight or more eight-ounce glasses a day, is integral for both overall health and skin health as well. Dink even more to compensate for caffeine’s dehydrating effects if you love your java.

#5 Save the Date to Exfoliate and Moisturize with Abandon.

Knees, elbows, hands, feet, face…and every single other place, can use some extra love to prevent the buildup of debris (which can lead to clogged pores and breakouts) and to help skin stay smooth and supple when the summer heat is on.

Exfoliating regularly also helps to improve the hydrating effects of toners and moisturizers and even makes makeup look fresher and stay intact longer.

Take extra care to scrub on your exfoliant before showering and treat your freshly cleansed skin to a rich body cream or oil within minutes of drying off to seal in moisture.
