The Skin Center Medical Spa Among First in Region to offer KYBELLA™ Fat Melting Injection to Treat Double Chin
KYBELLA™ is the First and Only Injectable Drug for Submental Fullness, or Double Chin
(PITTSBURGH – July 29, 2015) – A new nonsurgical, injectable treatment for contouring and improving the appearance of a moderate to severe double chin will be available to clients at the Skin Center Medical Spa in Pittsburgh, this month.
KYBELLA, (deoxycholic acid), is the first and only approved injectable drug on the market today that improves submental fullness, or double chin, by destroying the fat cells just underneath the skin (subcutaneous fat). Once the fat cells are eliminated, they cannot store or accumulate additional fat.
“This is the only FDA-approved, nonsurgical procedure capable of eliminating fat under the chin; prior to the KYBELLA injection, a double chin could only be improved with traditionally liposuction surgery, which is costly and requires downtime,” says Dominic Brandy, MD, board-certified cosmetic surgeon and founding medical director of The Skin Center Medical. “With KYBELLA, people can treat their double chin in a series of office visits, with very little, if any, downtime.”
The double chin, or submental fullness, is a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic that detracts from an otherwise balanced facial appearance – leading to an older and heavier look. The double chin can affect adults – both women and men – of all ages, weight and gender. Influenced by multiple factors including aging and genetics, the double chin is often resistant to diet and exercise. According to a 2014 survey by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, 68 percent of consumers are bothered by submental fullness or double chin.
With KYBELLA injections many people experience noticeable, visible results in just two to four treatments spaced at least one month apart. Each in-office treatment session is typically 15-20 minutes; up to six treatments may be needed. Treatment with KYBELLA is customized to patient’s aesthetic goals for improved contours and fat reduction of their double chin. Once the aesthetic ideal is achieved, re-treatment is not needed.
The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and formation of areas of hardness in the treatment area. In clinical trials, the incidence and severity of most side effects decreased with subsequent KYBELLA treatments.
As with all types of injectable treatments, Dr. Brandy strongly recommends asking about the education, training and experience of the person injecting before undergoing treatment. “If the injector does not have a proper understanding of facial anatomy and injects the KYBELLA incorrectly, the patient may experience some unwanted symptoms like trouble swallowing and even possible nerve injury, which can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.”
With a pending acquisition by Allergan Inc., KYBELLA will soon become part of Allergan Aesthetics, Inc. The Skin Center Medical Spa employs expert injectors to administer KYBELLA, including a dedicated National Trainer for Allergan, Inc. Debra Thomas, RN, The Skin Center’s National Trainer for Allergan, Inc., travels the country teaching other medical professionals proper injection techniques that deliver the best aesthetic results.

KYBELLA is the first and only approved injectable drug for contouring moderate to severe submental fullness, a condition that is commonly referred to as a double chin. KYBELLA™ is a non-human and non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into subcutaneous fat, KYBELLA™ causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
KYBELLA (deoxycholic acid) injection is indicated for improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults.
The safe and effective use of KYBELLA for the treatment of subcutaneous fat outside the submental region has not been established and is not recommended.
