What is Facial Vein Treatment?
Performed in Pittsburgh, PA and Columbus, OH, facial vein treatment is a non-invasive light-based treatment for telangiectasia, reticular veins, rosacea and a full range of other benign lesions. Using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or the Cynosure® Apogee Elite Laser, unwanted facial veins are selectively targeted and eliminated while leaving the healthy surrounding skin undisturbed.
In addition to removing unwanted facial spider veins and vascular lesions, facial vein treatment provides dramatic results for a variety of conditions including:
- Age Spots
- Sun-Damaged Skin
- Reticular Veins
- Acne Scarring
- Skin Blemishes
A typical treatment for facial veins with Intense Pulsed Light or the Cynosure Apogee Elite Laser can last from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.
Using a hand-held device, a medical provider delivers gentle pulses of light or laser energy to the affected facial spider veins or lesions. Treatment for facial veins target abnormal lesions or spider veins beneath the skin while leaving the healthy skin surface undisturbed.
Most individuals describe facial vein treatment to be very tolerable, describing the feeling as having a series of rubber bands snapped on the skin.
Recovery from Facial Vein Treatment
Following the facial vein treatment, most people are able to return to work and resume most activities immediately. Some very slight redness and swelling is normal and dissipates in several hours.
Generally, treated facial spider veins will at first darken and then begin to lighten and eventually fade away completely. The healing process can take anywhere from two weeks to a month.
Small superficial facial veins diminish nicely with facial vein treatments. Depending on the severity of the facial veins, multiple treatments, scheduled at least one month apart may be necessary to achieve the desired results.

Does facial vein treatment provide permanent* results?
Because facial vein treatments are completely non-invasive, results are seen gradually. The number of facial vein treatments needed depends upon the severity of facial spider veins and the area being treated. Generally, multiple treatments scheduled one month apart will produce the desired results.
Are there any risks associated with facial vein treatment?
The risks associated with facial vein treatments are minimal — the laser or light energy may cause redness and inflammation to the treated area. Facial vein treatments are completely non-invasive and requires no downtime. Normal daily activities can be resumed immediately following treatment. It is recommended that sunscreen be worn daily as the treated area will be sensitive to UV rays.
How do I know which treatment – the IPL or laser – will work best for my veins?
Prior to your facial vein treatment, you will have a private skin consultation. During your consultation your skin will be assessed and the appropriate facial vein treatment will be recommended. The type of technology used to treat facial veins depends on the severity of the facial veins.
