As we recently referenced on our Facebook page, it seems that arm lift surgery, or brachioplasty, is becoming more and more popular thanks to the rise of successful weight loss efforts—combined with the recent envy of some well-toned celebrity arms. Once Michelle Obama entered the limelight, her seemingly flapless arms became instantly coveted by women of all ages.

An arm lift may be the answer.

Regardless of how great our genetic code may have helped our arms stay relatively firm, the older we get, the more and more those under arm flaps seem to have GPS system of their own.

With an upper arm lift, you can expect to tighten sagging skin which creates a more defined contour of upper arm areas. Brachioplasty is well-suited for for women and men with varying degrees of sagging skin.

Dramatic weight loss tends to leave people with unwanted excess skin. Toning through exercise can only do so much. An arm lift can provide subtle skin tightening and toning or it can provide more dramatic results, depending on the amount of loose or sagging skin.

Benefits of upper arm lift surgery:

Eliminates sagging skin on the upper arms

Tightens and tones skin

Eliminates unwanted arm fat

Enhances natural contours of the arm

A major downfall of traditional arm lift surgery is that you’ll end up with a long scar along the length of your arm. This is what the media is currently warning prospective patients about.

Minimal scarring with Dr. Brandy’s technique

Board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Dominic Brandy has developed an improved technique (over traditional arm lift surgery) that helps conceal the scar in the armpit, as shown in the before and after photos above.

With Dr. Brandy’s technique, you cannot see the scar from either the front or the back when your arm is down. Not only that, since a football-shaped area of skin is removed from the armpit, the upper back and the lateral breast area (all at once) patients enjoy the benefit of a slight breast lift and back lift—in addition to the arm lift.

Additionally, sweat glands can be removed if the patient has problems with profuse sweating. After the procedure, the sweating issue is resolved.

During the same arm lift procedure, Dr. Brandy can perform SMARTLipo™ laser liposuction, a minimally invasive fat removal procedure which also increases skin tightening through the stimulation of collagen production.

To find out if you are a candidate for arm lift surgery (utilizing Dr. Brandy’s technique for minimal scarring) schedule your free consultation with us today.

With a great passion for skin care that’s backed by science, part of my responsibilities include choosing all of our skin care products, technologies and services. I also coach our providers in helping our patients become more educated and empowered in making the best choices in products, treatments and procedures for everything from acne treatment, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles to laser hair removal, skin tightening, tummy tucks—and more!

We recently held a 2-hour “Ask Ines” Facebook Chat to allow our Facebook fans to ask their skin care questions via an open forum, for all readers to benefit. What a great success it was! Topics ranged from adult acne and rosacea to skin tightening and weight loss. Here we will cover some of the great questions related to active acne, adult acne and acne laser treatment. We will also cover Q&A’s about other topics in future posts.

FOCUS ON ACNE TREATMENT

Here are some of the great questions I received from our Facebook fans:

Karen: What is the best treatment to get rid of raised acne scars on my chin? They are small but make the chin area and texture look very strange.

Ines: Karen, the best treatment for textural acne scarring, moderate to severe, would be Fraxel laser treatment. Fraxel laser acne treatment causes micro channels or wounds in the skin that will then cause your skin to rebuild the collagen in that area.

Karen: Ok great thank you! I only have this on a 1 1/2 inch area of my chin so can I only get that area done or do I need to do my entire face? I am fairly light skinned if that helps at all.

Ines: Absolutely, Karen. You can treat only your chin with Fraxel.

Kim: What is the best way to manage adult acne… I have always had combination skin and nothing seems to work…

Ines : The best treatment for the prevention of acne would be Cool Touch coupled with peels. Best acne treatments for scarring would depend on if the scarring is textural or hyperpigmented, which means that it could range from Fraxel Laser to IPL and peels. A consultation at any one of our centers would be the best thing for you to do!

Alisa: Who is the ideal candidate for a Microdermabrasion type treatment?

Ines: Anyone with active acne should stay away from Microdermabrasion until it is under control. Alisa, anyone wanting to improve tone, texture and clarity is a good candidate.

Ines: Thank you all for the great questions! Please know that this information is meant to be informative and is not intended to diagnose any skin related issues. In order to properly diagnose your skin issues, it is important to visit one of our centers for a free skincare evaluation and consultation!

And it rarely happens overnight. More often than not, our patients have been toying with the idea for a few years before finally picking up the phone to make an appointment for a QuickLift facelift consultation.

Does this scenario sound familiar?

You catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror—and (yikes!) you DON’T recognize that person. Or, you see an old photo—and you DO recognize yourself. “What happened!?!,” you wonder. So, in front of the mirror, you place your fingertips on your cheeks and gently pull your face up. “Oh… THERE I am.” you think to yourself.

You start to envision a more refreshed version of yourself. And you wonder how to make that happen. The first step is a QuickLift Facelift Consultation.

The Purpose of a QuickLift Facelift Consult

Unlike “consultants” at some mass-marketed facelift chains, our QuickLift Consultants have a background exclusively in cosmetic surgery—not sales and marketing. The consultant’s job is not to “sell” you a QuickLift, but to help you understand your options.

As QuickLift Consultant, Sharon Groesbeck, states, “The most important part of my job is to educate our patients so they can make highly informed choices.”

The goal of each QuickLift consultation is to:

educate you about the QuickLift facelift—and how it differs from and other procedures available

determine whether or not you are a good candidate for the QuickLift, based on your facial structure, your overall health and aesthetic goals

help you consider the choices that are right for you

If you aren’t quite ready for surgery, we sometimes suggest non-surgical options to help you achieve your goals.

What to Expect

During your initial consultation, you’ll meet with one of our QuickLift Surgical Consultants who will:

listen to your goals and concerns

perform an evaluation of your face, your skin and bone structure

share customized options available to you

review your health history

Why a Health History and Lab Work Are Important

While it is not brain surgery, cosmetic surgery is still surgery. We take it seriously and so should you. Unlike some facelifts, The QuickLift is performed in a state-licensed facility. We take extra care to ensure that matters of your overall health and safety are top priority.

As part of your health history, we need to know about any medical conditions, especially if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting problems, or a tendency to scar excessively. You should also mention whether or not you are a smoker and what medications you are taking. You may need to avoid certain vitamins and prescription medications prior to surgery.

By reviewing your health history and obtaining routine blood work (CBC, chemistry panel and clotting test) we help to rule out potentially risky complications. This gives you the peace of mind you deserve.

And since patients are understandably nervous about getting a QuickLift, we also offer you the opportunity to speak with one of our Patient Ambassadors—QuickLift patients who are happy to share their QuickLift experiences with you!

You might think that because I am the Director of Marketing at The Skin Center, I’m used to (or have even done) all the different treatments. Not so! Just like so many of our clients, I too, am curious about which products, treatments and services are right for me.

Being a freckly-faced red-head, I have lived my life with a not-so-clear-complexion. And on top of that, I’ve had my fair share of sunburn and hormonal acne (really!?) So when the marketing team and I started talking about the benefits of a chemical peel, I was totally intrigued.

Pre-Peel Jitters

After talking to Kasey—one of our estheticians—I decided to try the VI Peel Chemical Peel. She said it would lighten my freckles, brighten my overall complexion AND provide some skin-tightening and collagen-building benefits, all with minimal downtime. Even better, there’s an acne version.

I was hooked. But honestly, I was totally nervous. Nervous it would hurt, that it would be too much for my sensitive skin, that I’d lose all of my freckles (which are kinda cute per my husband) and nervous that I would look like Samantha Jones from Sex in The City, wearing that big black hat all week long. I was afraid that by losing too many freckles, I’d lose part of my identity! But Kasey and the team assured me that I’d be fine.

My First VI Peel Experience

Day 1: Peel Day

Kasey showed me the product, told me what it would feel like, how the peeling would progress and reviewed the aftercare. Wow—I think I heard every other word. What I did hear was that everything I needed would be provided in writing and that all after-care products were included in the kit. Phew! She explained that I would be applying half the product myself, as this was a multiple day process.

After make-up removal, we took my “before” pics. Nothing like having a camera in your face to capture all those fine lines and freckles. After a deep cleansing with medical-grade acetone (which burned for a few seconds) Kasey quickly applied the peel. I left looking like an Oompa Loompa and feeling a bit silly. My face was a tad itchy, but fine.

After an hour, I applied my first peel packet. Before bed, I cleansed and reapplied another towelette. I began to feel some tightness, but nothing crazy. Itching was at a minimum.

Day 2: Friday, 1 day post-Peel

I felt some tightness in the morning, but didn’t start to notice peeling (around the corners of my nose) until later in the day. As instructed, I applied moisturizer and sunscreen all day.

Around 10 pm, I cleansed and applied the final towelette. I felt a slight itchiness for sure, but it was manageable. About 20 minutes later, I added the moisturizer. I went to bed around midnight—and have to say that by 2 am I couldn’t bear it anymore. I simply could not sleep due to the tingly itching. I HAD TO wash my face. I used cool water and was immediately soothed. (Note: I checked with the team and they said this will not impact the results, as the product was on long enough to penetrate my skin. Phew!)

Day 3: Saturday, 2 days post-Peel

The peeling was really beginning. Just like Kasey said, it started from the corners of my nose and moved outward. My chin was definitely peeling as well. But not too bad. With enough moisturizer it’s totally manageable. I applied moisturizer and sunscreen like mad—about every hour. By late day, I noticed that my forehead and eye areas were super dry and tight. When I squinted or lifted my forehead, I could see how taught my skin was—like I had shrink wrap on my face!

Day 4: Sunday, 3 days post-Peel

The peeling on my forehead was quite noticeable. I had to resist the urge to peel the sheet on my forehead. Aha! I noticed a large dark spot/freckle was gone— it just peeled right off.

Day 5-7: Monday – Thursday post-Peel

The peeling slowly subsided—moving last to my jawbone and hairline. It’s easy to hide with lots of moisturizer and cover up. The rest of the week was fine. And truly, after Monday, all signs of peeling (and itching) were gone.

My skin definitely feels lovely—it’s soft and smooth. I have had a very few small blemishes appear, but Kasey mentioned that could occur. By day 7, we did post-peel pictures. We’ll do more again in two weeks. I can’t wait get VI Peel #2 and see the difference!

More later!

Final Results!

After several months of treatments—alternating between Intense Pulsed Light (IPL and Chemical Peels on the right side of my face and Fraxel on the left side of my face, Nellie and I are finished with our Sun Damage Recovery experiment.

I’ve now had a series of three treatments on each side of my face plus Fraxel on my neck and upper chest (decollatage) area.

In my particular case, Fraxel gave us the most dramatic overall results, although IPL was also extremely effective at removing patches of hyperpigmentation. As you can see when zooming in on my “after” photos, the Fraxel (left) side of my face is clearer than the right. And while my “after” face is fuller due to winter weight gain, you can notice that my left cheek is slightly plumper than my right. This is the result of the collagen boost offered by Fraxel. I will be doing Fraxel on the right side soon to gain my symmetry back while I lose those excess pounds.

I cannot emphasize enough, that no matter which treatment you may choose, it is important to maintain your results by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 (or higher) year-round. Snow and water intensify the sun’s reflection, so you must reapply your sunscreen often in these conditions.

Sun Damage: Treatment Advice from Nellie Sicher, RN

Now that our results of our half-IPL, half-Fraxel experiment are complete, I asked Nellie how she’ll be advising patients who seek remedies for sun damage.

“After doing our “1/2 & 1/2″ experiment,” Nellie replied, “it became clear that goals, downtime allowed and budget will dictate which treatment would be the best for each individual.

The most effective sun damage treatment (and sometimes the biggest investment) is Fraxel. Fraxel easily picks up on hyperpigmentation and results can be dramatic just after one treatment. Two or three treatments may be needed, depending on the extent of damage and one’s goal for their skin. The reason some patients decide not to do Fraxel is the investment and, more often, the downtime. It can take up to a full week for redness, swelling and peeling to subside.

The other effective option we offer is IPL, which can be done alone or in combination with Chemical Peels. IPL is most effective for light skin types with dark hyperpigmentation. A series of three (or more) IPL treatments with three peels (between IPL treatments) is typical. But once again, it depends on your end goals.

Costs vs. benefits: In a nutshell, Fraxel can provide the most dramatic results in the least amount of time, since only one treatment may be sufficient. At roughly half the cost of Fraxel, IPL is most economical (based on cost per treatment) without any downtime following treatment. But the process may be slow and deeper or lighter pigments may not diminish as much as we would like.

Whether you choose IPL or Fraxel, pricing packages are available for multiple treatments, based on needs and desired goals.

I personally prefer Fraxel because of the outcome that I have seen with my all my patients, including Deb. They love the results—and the fringe benefit of collagen stimulation!”

To find out which treatment and price point may be best for you, schedule an appointment for a Skin Consultation at The Skin Center by calling 800-429-1151.

As mentioned in my previous post, I was lucky enough to choosing between the top two technologies available for the treatment of hyperpigmentation—Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Fraxel Laser Resurfacing.

After a consultation with my provider, Nellie Sicher, RN, we decided to do BOTH—in order to show our patients which treatment works best for my particular condition: hyperpigmentation AND aging skin.

While IPL offers amazing recovery for sun damaged skin, Fraxel’s Dual Laser technology also rejuvenates aging skin by targeting layers beneath the surface. This wounding effect causes the body’s natural healing process to stimulate the production of collagen. So, our experiment was to treat the right side of my face IPL ( and a series of Chemical Peels between treatments) while simulataneously treating the left side with Fraxel.

While there may be a few more days of recovery time (over IPL) Fraxel, offers additional benefits not offered by IPL:

Fraxel Dual Laser Skin Resurfacing

Excellent for reducing brown sun damaged spots

Offers great improvement for fine lines and wrinkles

Stimulates collagen growth

Can greatly improve acne scars

Improves textural irregularities and stretch marks

Results noticeable within 5-7 days

Can be done of the face and body

Topical anesthetic needed an hour prior to treatment

Up to 3 days of minor swelling and up to 1 week of redness

Best done as a series of 3 to 6 treatments

Fraxel is laser energy used to treat sun damage by targeting water in the skin. With Dual Fraxel, two laser frequencies (1550 and 1927) are used to target both aging and sun-damaged skin in separate passes. With the first pass, microscopic laser columns penetrate deep into your skin to stimulate your body’s production of collagen and elastin—the two structural proteins that give your skin elasticity, tone and firmness. And since the laser treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, it leaves the surrounding tissue intact, which promotes very rapid healing. The second pass targets hyperpigmentation.

My treatment with Fraxel on the left side of my face was a bit more involved than IPL. I used hydroquinone cream on the left side and on my entire neck and chest area for 2 weeks prior to treatment. This pre-treatment calms the melanocytes to protect your skin during treatment. One hour before treatment I applied an anesthetic cream. During treatment I noticed a prickly heat sensation. I’ll be honest. It wasn’t like a Bedford Springs facial, but since the device blows cool air over the treated area, it’s tolerable and quick. After treatment I felt and looked like I spent a day at the beach. The sunburned feeling totally subsided after a few hours. I noticed slight swelling and redness for a couple of days.

Nellie gave me a great supply of healing cream and emollient moisturizer. It’s important to keep the area moist for several days after treatment.

DAY 3: The peeling began. Pretty exciting. The continued use of moisturizer helps the dead surface layers of skin just slide off as you gently wash your face. I avoided using abrasive cleansers and my beloved Clarisonic for a week. I had to restrain myself from pulling off the layers prematurely. “Stay away from the mirror,” said the rational voice in my head.

Day 5-6: The peeling process was complete. And wow! I never thought such fresh, baby soft was under all those freckles and brown patches. Not only did my sun damage fade more and more with each treatment, but I noticed that my skin was actually firmer to the touch. The apples of my cheeks are actually more lifted. More youthful.

That is the beauty of Dual Fraxel. It’s like getting 2 treatments in one!

This is Part 4 of 5 in our SUN DAMAGE RECOVERY Series. Coming up next… Part 5: RESULTS! See Before and Afters for both IPL and FRAXEL.

Faced with the good fortune of choosing between the top two technologies available for the treatment of hyperpigmentation—Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and Fraxel Laser Resurfacing—I had a tough decision to make.

Or did I?

After some serious discussion with the experts at The Skin Center about the benefits of each technology, I did something rather unconventional. I chose BOTH. I thought it would be beneficial for our patients to see the results of both treatments on the same face—mine. So I offered up the right side of my
face IPL (with Chemical Peels) and the left side to Fraxel. Call me crazy, but I trust that at the end of this experiment I can get evened out if one side looks different than the other.

The benefits of IPL are many:

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

Excellent for reducing brown sun damage spots

Also diminishes broken capillaries, rosacea and reddened skin

Offers some improvement for fine lines and pore size

Nearly immediate results which improve with a series of treatments

No anesthetic needed

No downtime

Can be used on the face and body

IPL is light energy used to treat sun damage by targeting brown, blue and red pigments in the skin. Treatment is delivered through a gentle light pulse to the skin over several 15 to 30 minute treatments which are typically administered in two to four-week intervals. The Skin Center’s IPL series includes light chemical peels in between each IPL treatment to facilitate the process.

My treatment with IPL on the right side of my face was great. It felt like tiny rubber bands snapping on my face, but I laughed about it. It was completely tolerable without any need for pre-medication. After treatment, Nellie gave me an ice roller that helped cool the sensation of warmth on my face. In a few minutes, I was good to go. The treated area was slightly red with very minimal swelling for 1-2 days.

Day 2: Anxious to see the overnight development, I ran to the mirror before my coffee—only to find that what looked like tiny grounds of my favorite java had landed on my face. Yes, the right half of my face was dappled in with a layer of coffee-ground-like spots. I was thrilled since that meant those freckles got a good IPL beating, were darkening (as expected) and would soon flake away.

Day 4-5: The gentle flaking of the darkened spots was complete, revealing very fresh and less pigmented skin. People noticed and commented immediately! What a difference! And how exciting to know that my next was a chemical peel, followed by two more IPL treatments. Dark spots discolorations and pore size will gradual begin to fade and may disappear completely with each treatment. Treatment with IPL is a breeze!!

Kate. Kate. Three cheers to Kate Upton for proudly owning her curves.

The two-time cover model for Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue isn’t your typical stick thin runway model.

Her va-va-voom shape however has drawn criticism from those who dare to call her “porky” and “fat” on celebrity trainer David Kirsch’s Facebook page.

Porky? Seriously?

Granted…runway thin, she is not. But that’s a welcome change, isn’t it? Apparently Sports Illustrated thinks so. And the ranks of Victoria Secrets, Mercedes Benz, Guess, Dourney & Bourke, Sam Edelman and Accessorize would agree.

With her popularity among the fashionistas continuing to soar, we hope that more full-figured women of all shapes and sizes continue to redefine classic beauty.

Yes, Kate did have a help getting more fit. To prepare for the swimsuit issue’s photo shoot in Antarctica, Kate started working out with the trainer known to “Kirsch” stars like Heidi Klum, Liv Tyler and Anne Hathaway.

The two first started working together in August out of Kirsch’s Madison Square Club when she wanted some basic body maintenance, toning and nutritional counseling. Kirsch states, “I made it very clear to her, I love her curves and I wasn’t going to do anything to [make her] skinnier. It was about toning her legs, butt, abs, arms, and to really dial into the diet.”

Yet still, some cared to comment on the outcome with nasty digs about her weight. Kate’s reaction? With enough confidence not to care what people think, Kate refuses to starve herself to be thin. “I want to enjoy life, and I can’t if I’m not eating and miserable,” stated Upton.

With these comments, Kate embraces The Skin Center’s beauty philosophy. It’s not about achieving perfection or trying to please others. It’s about feeling confident…for the purpose of living life more fully and more joyfully.

Thankfully, Kate can laugh those envious comments off—all the way to the bank!
