What is Botox?

Made by Allergan Aesthetics, Botox is an FDA-approved injectable neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes facial muscles. This reduces the look of moderate to severe dynamic facial wrinkles, such as forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet. Botox also makes the surface of your skin extremely smooth, creating an overall rejuvenated appearance.

How does Botox work?

Botox temporarily relaxes facial muscles to soften the look of dynamic facial wrinkles that are created by repeated muscle movements, specifically forehead lines, furrowed brows, and crow’s feet. The primary active ingredient in Botox is botulinum toxin, a neuromodulator, which blocks the nerve signals to the targeted muscles, so they can’t contract.

Botox FAQs
  • Is botox safe?

Botox is FDA-approved and meets The Skin Center’s highest standards for safety. Every Botox treatment at The Skin Center is administered by an expert clinician who is committed to ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

  • Are there any side effects?

You may experience mild bruising, redness or a mild headache following treatment. These effects typically subside within a day or two. In rare cases, when patients do not keep their head upright for the recommended four hours after treatment, Botox can migrate and affect adjacent muscles—this may cause temporary drooping of the eyebrow or upper eyelid that resolves within several weeks.

  • How long does a Botox treatment take?

First time appointments are 30 minutes long to discuss your individual concerns and administer the injections. A two-week follow-up approintment is recommended for firs-time patients, which is a quick 15 minute appointment. Overall, the total treatment time really depends on how many areas are treated to meet your personal skin goals.

  • Is there any downtime after getting Botox?

No, but you may notice some redness or bruising around the injection area that can be easily concealed with makeup. The majority of our patients get back to their daily activities right after their treatment, with the exception of avoiding strenuous activity and exercise for the remainder of the day and night following treatment.

  • When will I see my Botox results?

You’ll see the full results within ten to fourteen days.

  • How long does Botox last?

The duration of Botox results can depend on the patient, areas treated, and the dosage used. Most patients can expect significant wrinkle reduction to last for about three to four months. We recommend scheduling Botox appointments at this interval to maintain results.

  • How much does Botox cost at The Skin Center?

The cost of Botox at The Skin Center is based on the number of units needed for your treatment. New patients can receive Botox for $12 per unit during their first treatment. Returning patients typically pay between $13 and $15.50 per unit, depending upon available specials and packages, participation in programs such as Bank Your Botox, Alle Rewards and The Skin Center Loyalty program.

The total cost of treatment varies based on the areas being treated, your facial anatomy, and the number of units required to achieve your desired results. During your consultation, one of our experienced medical clinicians will recommend a personalized treatment plan and provide an exact cost estimate.

When it comes to Botox, price shouldn’t be the deciding factor. The best injector combines expertise, precision, and personalized care to achieve natural-looking, lasting results.

  • What is better: Botox or Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are both FDA-approved neuromodulators that temporarily relax selected facial muscles and effectively smooth lines and wrinkles. Some patients respond preferentially to one neuromodulator versus the other, but they are intended to provide similar aesthetic results.

We suggest scheduling a consultation with one of our clinicians, who can discuss both options and develop the best treatment plan for you.

While both Botox and Dysport treat wrinkles and fine lines, they differ in formulation, onset of action, diffusion, and dosage. Learn more about the differences between Botox vs. Dyport.

  • At what age should you start getting Botox?

There is no “right” age to begin getting Botox, but it is approved for patients over 18 years of age. Some patients start getting Botox in their twenties to prevent wrinkles from forming, while others begin treatment later in life to minimize existing wrinkles. Our clinicians can facilitate these conversations and help you decide if Botox injections are right for you.

  • Who should not get Botox?

Avoid getting Botox if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin, or if you have an active infection at the injection site. Botox is not recommended for people with neuromuscular disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or myasthenia gravis.

  • How does a “Botox lip flip” work?

The Botox lip flip is an injection technique that creates the appearance of a fuller, plumper upper lip. This treatment involves the precise placement of Botox to temporarily relax the muscle around the mouth, causing the lip to roll slightly upward, making it appear more voluminous and defined. The Botox lip flip is a great solution for patients who desire more subtle lip enhancement without adding the volume of dermal fillers. Patients can see results for up to three months.

  • How much does a lip flip with Botox cost?

Lip flip pricing at The Skin Center is offered at a flat rate of $180 per treatment. This treatment uses a small amount of Botox to subtly enhance the appearance of the upper lip, creating a fuller-looking smile without adding volume.

  • Can you get Botox under your eyes?

Botox is typically used around the outer corners of your eyes to help minimize crow’s feet. Botox is not generally used to treat under-eye puffiness or dark circles. The Skin Center offers a number of options that treat dark circles, crepey skin and under-eye hollows, which will be discussed during a personalized consultation.
