What Are Female Hormones?
The three primary female hormones, called the “sex hormones,” include estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Together, these hormones determine your moods and energy levels; control how youthful you look and feel (and how well you age); regulate your sexual desire and control your ability to have children. Simply put, these hormones make you who you are.
For these reasons and many more, the female “sex hormones”, when properly balanced, will keep you looking and feeling your best through perimenopause, menopause and beyond.
Estrogen consists of three types of estrogen hormones – Estrone, Estradiol, Estriol – and they each play an important role in female reproduction and sexual development as well as many other functions of the body including bone development. Each estrogen hormone, Estrone (E1), Estadiol (E2) and Estriol (E3) plays a very different role in the function of the body and is present, until perimenopause or menopause, in relatively fixed ratios of 10/10/80 percent, respectively.
Benefits of Estrogen
- Maintains the amount of collagen in the skin
- Decreases blood pressure
- Helps maintain memory
- Increases concentration
- Improves fine motor skills
- Decreases depression and anxiety
- Reduces irritability
- Enhances energy
- Reduces the overall risk of heart disease
- Improves mood
- Heightens sexual desire
- Maintains bone density
- And so much more!
The estrogen hormones account for more than 400 functions in the body. When there is an imbalance in estrogen the entire body is affected. Just a few of the symptoms of estrogen imbalance include: frequent headaches or migraines, restless sleep, loss of muscle mass, foggy thinking, thin, dry skin and weight gain in the belly, sagging breasts and hot flashes.
When supplementing estrogen, it is important to maintain the natural ratios of estrogen hormones to achieve optimal health and wellness. The synthetic hormones, derived from horse urine, do not support the ideal 10/10/80 ratio. The only way to maintain the proper 10/10/80 ratio is through Hormone Replacement Therapy with bioidentical hormones.
At The Skin Center, as part of our comprehensive hormone treatment program, each of your estrogen levels will be monitored and adjusted as needed by our certified registered nurse practitioner to ensure the proper estrogen ratios are achieved and maintained throughout your treatment program.
Progesterone is often referred to as the happy hormone: improving sleep, calming the nerves and reducing anxiety. Progesterone is produced by the ovaries and is used by the body to make other hormones such as estrogen and testosterone. Women who have low levels of progesterone may experience thinning hair or hair loss, anxiety, depression, migraine headaches, weight gain, decreased sexual interest and insomnia.
Benefits of Progesterone:
- Helps to balance estrogen levels
- Improves sleep
- Natural calming effect
- Lowers high blood pressure
- Helps the body use and eliminate fats
- Lowers cholesterol
- Increases scalp hair
- Increases metabolic rate
- Natural antidepressant
- Improves sexual desire
- And More!
Progesterone plays an important role in achieving optimal health; however one of its most vital roles is to balance estrogen in the body and help prevent the body from having too much estrogen, which is often called estrogen dominance. If you lack estrogen or are estrogen dominant, a safe and effective way to balance your estrogen is with bioidentical progesterone. Derived from plants, bioidentical progesterone is compounded into a cream and applied directly to the skin.
As with your estrogen levels, your progesterone levels will be monitored regularly as part of our comprehensive hormone treatment program.
Testosterone is not just a male hormone; women need it too! Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are the trifecta of female hormones and for optimal health through perimenopause and menopause these hormones need to work harmoniously. Women suffering from low testosterone often complain about having a lack of energy, no sex drive, weight gain and loss of muscle mass.
Many women feel that as they get older it becomes more difficult to maintain the level of health and fitness they had enjoyed through their thirties and mid-forties – even if their diet and exercise routine has not changed. The reason can often be attributed to lower testosterone levels because testosterone naturally declines as we age. Other causes of low testosterone include the onset of menopause, childbirth, depression, birth control pills, adrenal stress and psychological trauma.
- Increases sexual desire
- Promotes emotional well-being
- Increases muscle mass, strength and endurance
- Improves memory
- Maintains skin elasticity
- Decreases body fat
- Improves bone strength
- And so much more!
Maintaining the proper level of testosterone in women is important for improved health and vitality, but too much testosterone can lead to unwanted side effects such has facial hair, increased agitation and anger, salt and sugar cravings, depression, fatigue, acne, weight gain and increased risk of heart disease.
As part of our comprehensive concierge hormone treatment program, our experts will monitor your testosterone levels to ensure that the ideal ratio to estrogen and progesterone is maintained.
