FAQs

Botox 101

What is Botox?

BOTOX® is an FDA-approved injectable neuromodulator that temporarily relaxes your facial muscles, which in turn reduces the look of moderate to severe dynamic facial wrinkles, such as forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet. It also makes the surface of your skin extremely smooth, which creates an overall rejuvenated appearance and reduces the tendency for foundation and makeup to crease into wrinkles. When administered by one of our licensed Expert Providers, Botox will work its skin-perfecting magic, yet you'll retain natural, expressive facial movement.

How does Botox work?

Botox, made by Allergan Aesthetics, temporarily relaxes facial muscles to soften the look of dynamic facial wrinkles that are created by repeated muscle movements, specifically frown lines, furrowed brows, and crow's feet. The Botox serum contains botulinum toxin type A, a neuromodulator, which blocks the nerve signals to the targeted muscles, so they can't contract.

Is Botox safe?

Botox is approved by the FDA and has minimal side effects. The Skin Center's safety protocols are of the highest standards. Our licensed Expert Providers are expertly trained and the most skilled in the region.

Are there any side effects?

Some patients may experience mild bruising at the injection site or a mild headache. These conditions should gradually subside in a day or two. In rare cases, when someone doesn't keep their head upright, Botox may migrate and weaken nearby muscles. This may cause eyebrow or upper eyelid drooping, but is a temporary condition that usually corrects itself in several weeks.

How long does it take to get Botox?

Botox injections are pretty quick. First, the licensed Expert Provider will identify where to administer each injection. Then, using a tiny micro-needle, a small amount of the Botox serum is precisely injected into targeted facial muscles. It usually takes less than five minutes per facial area, but this varies based on how severe your wrinkles are and the size of the area.

Is there any downtime after getting Botox?

You might notice some redness or slight bruising around the injection area, which can be covered up easily with concealer or foundation. Normal daily activities can be resumed immediately after your appointment, as long as you maintain an upright position until bedtime. However, we recommend refraining from exercising for 24 hours. Also, pressure should not be applied to the treated area for about five hours post-treatment.

When will I see results?

It takes about 10 days for the full effects of Botox to be seen. Once the treated facial muscles become relaxed, the skin overlying them will look smoother, with fewer wrinkles and deep lines. The surrounding untreated facial muscles will still behave normally, allowing for natural-looking facial expressions to be unaffected.

How long do the results of Botox last?

Although results vary, most individuals can expect significant wrinkle reduction to last about four months. To maintain results, schedule your Botox appointments about every four months. Results tend to be longer-lasting with accumulative treatments.

How much does Botox cost?

The cost of Botox is determined by the number of facial areas being treated, and the number of injections needed to achieve the desired results. During a consultation with one of our expertly skilled providers, you'll discuss your facial rejuvenation goals and receive a proposed treatment plan, along with an associated cost.

At what age should you start getting Botox?

Botox is approved for patients over 18 years old. There is no magic age to start Botox. If you're noticing fine lines while your face is at rest, it may be time to start thinking about Botox. While the most common use of Botox is to treat already visible lines and wrinkles, it can also be used to prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place.

Who should not get Botox?

Avoid getting Botox if you are pregnant or nursing. If you're hypersensitive to any botulinum toxin avoid this treatment. If you have an infection at the injection site, you'll need to clear it up first.  It's not recommended for people with a neuromuscular disease (like multiple sclerosis or myasthenia gravis).
