SMARTLipo laser liposuction

What is SmartLipo laser liposuction?

SmartLipo™ laser liposuction is a minimally-invasive liposuction technology that surgically reduces fat from the face and under the chin while at the same time tightening the skin to define the jawline and slim the upper neck area.

Laser liposuction surgery in Pittsburgh is performed at The Skin Center Medical Spa in our PA state licensed surgical facility located in Mt. Lebanon, PA. The surgery for laser liposuction in Columbus, OH is performed in our Columbus surgery center.

What areas can SmartLipo treat?

Utilizing a very thin cannula with a laser tip, laser liposuction quickly melts small areas of fat and tightens skin on the:

  • Neck
  • Jowls
  • Chin
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Abdominal area
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Face
  • Neck

Skin tightening with laser liposuction

A unique benefit of laser lipo is that it promotes skin tightening through thermal heating and tissue coagulation, something traditional liposuction cannot do. This allows men and women with loose skin - who previously were not ideal candidates for conventional liposuction - to have a body contouring treatment with the added benefit of skin tightening.*

Who is a good candidate for SmartLipo?

Ideal liposuction candidates are in good health, of normal body weight and have realistic expectations for fat removal and skin tightening. SmartLipo facial liposuction and neck liposuction are best for people who have small pockets of fat under the neck, jowls or face that seem to be resistant to other weight reduction methods.

Laser liposuction vs. conventional liposuction

SmartLipo laser liposuction:

  • Local anesthesia
  • Laser-equipped 1-2mm probe
  • Liquifies fat
  • Promotes tissue tightening
  • No sutures
  • Little or no scarring with proper care
  • Downtime approximately 2 days
  • Compression garments optional for larger areas only

Conventional liposuction:

  • General anesthesia or IV sedation
  • Larger suctioning cannula
  • Suctions fat
  • Sagging skin sometimes necessitates additional surgical procedures
  • Sutures closure
  • Longer scars
  • Downtime about 7-10 days
  • Requires use of compression garments for 2 weeks

SmartLipo procedure

Laser liposuction with SmartLipo™ is performed as a simple outpatient treatment. Laser liposuction is performed with local anesthesia, and depending on the area treated, can be performed in less than an hour.

A paperclip-thin probe, approximately 1-2mm in diameter containing a laser fiber, is inserted beneath the skin. The probe is moved back and forth delivering the laser's energy to the fat cells, causing the fat cells to rupture and liquefy. The liquefied fat is easily drained or absorbed through the body's lymphatic system where it's flushed naturally from the body.

In Pittsburgh, laser liposuction surgery is performed by board-certified cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jason Tomsic or board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Craig Oser in our Mt. Lebanon state-licensed, nationally-accredited surgery center.

In Columbus, SmartLipo is performed by board-certified plastic surgeon, Fernando Colon, MD.

How many SmartLipo treatments will I need?

For most people, typically only one laser liposuction treatment is required. The session may last from 45 minutes to one hour depending on the area treated.

Laser liposuction results

Results are seen immediately with continued improvement over several weeks.*

Adults do not "regenerate" new fat cells. Fat cells are permanently* removed during a facial laser liposuction treatment. After laser liposuction, if people gain weight the fat will be deposited to other areas of the body.

SmartLipo recovery

After laser liposuction, you may experience mild swelling and bruising. We recommend 1-2 days without vigorous activity but most patients are able to return to work the following day, depending on their occupation. A compression garment can be worn if laser liposuction is used for fat removal on larger areas of the body.

Can you combine laser liposuction with other procedures?

Laser liposuction on the face can be performed alone or in conjunction with other types of cosmetic surgery procedures such as:

  • Facelift procedures
  • QuickLift® Facelift
  • Eyelid surgery
  • Chin implant surgery

If performed on the body, SmartLipo can be combined with:

  • Tummy tuck
  • Arm lift
  • Face lift
  • Liposuction
